Sixty Years of Age

Wednesday the Anniversary of thr Platting of Town of Culver

Short History and Incidient of the Early Settlement of the Town and Union Township

(continued from Last week)

Simon Pokagon, the last of the Pottawatomie chiefs, died in the summer of 1900.

He was quite an author writinh "The Redman's Greeting"

Chief Aubbeenaubrr was killed by his son in a druken spree.

The first reisdent minister in the county was Wm. Thompson, a Babtpst, who lived on a farm near here in 1856.

The first resdient physician was Dr. Thomas Logan, 1836

Cyrus Taber ws the first white child norn in this county

The first marriafe in the county after its organization (Feb. 4, 1836) was solemnized by John Pomeroy a justice of the peace on June 23rd, 1836. The contracting parties were John W> Crusan and Mathilda Henderson.

The name of the town was first Uellow River post office, next (1848) Union Town, the (1851) Marmont

It was changed to Marmonot through the efforts of Dr. Durr.

Marmont was the name of Napoleon Boneparte's favorite marshall.

The town was nexet called Culver City and finally Culver in honor of Henry Culver founder of the Culver Military Academy.

The first post offive was in a small building on the lot sourh if th tin shop. In 1861 8t was moved to a building on the lot now occupied by Nathaniel Gandy's residentc.

The first shoe shop kept by Samuel Martin

The first store was owned by Eph. More and Wm Thompson floowed by Robert Blakley.

In 1867 there were only twelve house in the town.

At this time the people were mostly Mrethodist and Baptists, worshipping alternately in the old schoolt house.

The Methodist church was built in 1868 and rebuit in. 1899; the reformed in 1890, the catholic in 1897 and the Evangelical in 1899

The first school house was a log one standing east of the one used at presnet. The second was the residence of Albert Stahl, the thrid the building occupied by Oliver Mooorrois, the forth built in 1877 is still in use

N. F. Clark, psotamser in 1898, arranged to move the office to the depot but through the efforts of the bu siness men it was retained. Tis was an important event for the reason that had he succeeded in changing the office the princpal prt of the town would new be Toner Ave.

The Vandalia rairoad was built to this place in 2884 snf the track was built in 1885/

The town was incorporated in 1894 and Jul 5th of that year the following officers were elected

    School Board: George Garsn O. A. Rea and E. B. Vanschoiack
